Processes: the verbs of event management

A process is a series of tasks that is repeated over the management of an event. A typical example is risk management. Looking for problems and attempting to minimize the risk is common throughout the management of any event. Other processes occur once or twice. Design the event site may only occur once in a particular event - but its common to all events. The processes are the 'verbs' of event management.

Process mapping involves extracting these processes, describing them and their interactions By doing this, the processes may be improved, delegated and, in some cases, automated though software. Attendee registration is an example of a process used in certain events, repeated many times and is ultimately automated. VIP liaison is a process that is repeated but is unlikely to be automated completely and will involve a checklist.

EPMS takes a process perspective of the management of events and the portfolio. Below is a diagram showing how we have clustered the processes into management areas. Some of the processes are universal and some are only used at a certain time and in a certain area of management. This can be cross referenced to the three dimension drawing of event management.
